The town itself lies at 203 metres above sea level, its lowest point at 189 metres by the Danube, its highest at about 545 metres up in the vineyards. Eleven cadastral communities belong to it, among them Krems and Stein an der Donau, with the former Capuchin monastery of Und between them. The reason is not the driving time, which stays short inside the town, but the difference between the locations. The old towns of Krems and Stein are closed ensembles and have stood, together with the Wachau, on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2000. Of the former ring of walls the Steiner Tor is the only one of four town gates still standing, and it is a good picture of the matter: behind it things get tight. From the bank up into the vineyards
To the north the town leaves the river and climbs. In 2022 about 980 hectares of vineyards were worked within the town, and the houses in between often stand higher than the street.
